Our minds work on two levels – the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. We make decisions, think and act with our conscious (logical) mind. The subconscious mind controls our habits and even influences our behaviour. Sometimes, we want to change something but find it difficult. Quite often this is because the conscious and the subconscious minds do not agree – it can seem like you are having an argument with yourself. For example you may find yourself thinking, “I don’t want a cigarette, yes I do, and then no I don’t, then go on and have one, no I don’t want to have one”. This is an example of disagreements or conflicts between the two parts of the mind. In hypnosis or in trance we can communicate directly with the subconscious mind without logical thought getting in the way. We can change the subconscious part of the mind so that the two parts of the mind agree. This means you no longer feel as if you are having a fight or disagreement with yourself.
